What Is Hosting?

How much time do you have? Hosting is one of those core Internet concepts that starts out simple and gets insanely confusing as you delve into it.

Every website is 'Hosted' somewhere.

In other words, the 'hosting' entity runs a machine that not only stores a given website but - most critically - makes it possible for other machines around the Internet to find that website on their machine.

Many Internet Service Providers (AOL is the biggest but there are tens of thousands worldwide) offer physical space on their machines for their customers to create and manage their own website. The Provider (known as an ISP) runs the software that enables those websites to be found by those looking for them around the world.

(As you might imagine, there are still other entities charged with managing the software, indexes and other widgets that keep track of tens of millions of web sites. Let's not worry our heads about that at the moment).

If you have a powerful enough machine and the right software, you can host your own website - and the websites of your family and friends, for that matter. Userland's Frontier enables you to just that. Indeed, you can host your Radio weblog on your own machine as well.

While these concepts may seem intimidating (host my own website? You've got to be kidding ...), many of us envision a day not too many years away when most of us will indeed host our own sites - or, rather, our personal computers will do that with a surprising minimum of fuss required on our part.

What is search

there is a business opportunity for anyone to create an index of its contents and an interface for searching that index. Such interfaces are known as Search Engine. Typically the user will type in a few words that relate to what he or she is looking for and click a search button, at which point the search engine will present a links to web pages which are, hopefully, relevant to that search.

While some early indexes of the web were created by hand, modern search engine rely on automated exploring, or "spidering," of the web by specialized programs that behave somewhat like web browsers but do not require a human operator.

As of this writing, Google remains the most popular search engine by a large margin. MSN Search is also a significant player.

WHAT IS DOMAIN

Domain registration is the process by which a company or individual can secure a website domain, such as http://www.freeonlinetricks.com

Once you have completed domain registration the domain becomes yours for the period of the contract, usually one year. Before registration expires it must be renewed, or the domain reverts back to being available to the general public.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) manages the international Domain Name Server (DNS) database. ICANN insures that all registered names are unique and map properly to a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address. The IP address is the numerical address of the website that tells other computers on the Internet where to find the server host and domain.

Domain registration is available to the public via a registrar & next procedure is hosting web server. Fees and services vary from company to company, but the process is generally inexpensive. Before a domain registration can be approved, the new name must be checked against existing names in the DNS database. The online registrar provides a field into which you can enter your desired name and hierarchy —- that is, the letters that come after the "dot." Familiar hierarchies are .com, .net, .org, .name, .info and .biz. If the name is not already taken, it is available for domain registration.
